Farm Wanted
Farmer In Search Of Farm
After several years of renting land in Fairlee, Post Mills, and Piermont, NH, I am looking for a long-term land arrangement. That may be a direct sale or a secure, long-term lease.
The basic needs:
- 20-60 tillable acres of prime soils, or soils of statewide importance.
- Water source/s that's immediately available or easily developed, for irrigation
Things that would be most excellent:
- buildings (barn, shed)
- power and water in place (for greenhouses, wash stations, potable water)
- housing
- additional forest or pasture acres
Location: while I'd like to stay in the Fairlee, VT area to be close to family, I'm open to other locations that feel good and right.
My farm vision:
They say that much of North America was, as people from Europe began to settle, a garden without gardeners. That is, indigenous Americans cultivated huge swaths of the continent with a mixture of practices that included annual agriculture (crops like corn, beans, squash), burning to increase habitat for game, and planting or selecting orchards of nut and fruit trees. I'd like to create a landscape like that, with
- widely spaced rows of trees, bushes, and vines for nuts and fruit
- wide alleys of annual crops including grains, dry beans, and vegetables
- a third- to half of the tillable land in cover crops to improve and maintain soil health, and to provide grazing for pasture-raised eggs and meat
My intention is to take care of the land, farming at a small but mechanized scale, with multiple enterprises all integrated into one system. Sort of a proof-of-concept for figuring out how to grow food for ourselves here in the North Country.
